The foremost pleasure is healthy body, and youthfulness remains forever. Scientists and doctors have discovered such diet and lifestyle, age enhancing medicines, flora etc which increases longevity and youth upon regular intake. This is not mere imagination but reality. In the ancient times our sages lived more than hundreds of years by virtue of yoga, penance, divine diet, and herbal medicine.
Many articles have been published in magazines, newspaper, internet, television etc regarding linseed and its properties. Someone informed me that a company has manufactured biscuits of flaxseed. A patient who had undergone coronary bypass surgery at Delhi was advised by the doctor to eat flaxseed regularly so that he will remain free from hypertension and heart disease. Flaxseed has been termed as superstar food at some places. In ayurveda linseed is treated as daily food. I was impressed with linseed’s quality which we have nearly forgotten that it is beneficial for our health, and is a way of life and lifeline. I started taking linseed regularly and encouraged other patients to consume linseed. Within a few months my life changed. Immense strength and excitement flew within me and I was encompassed with vigor and vitality and amazing self confidence. Tension, anger and laziness had vanished. My hypertension and diabetes had been cured. This vigor and vitality and self confidence awakened in me the desire to loose weight and I reduced up to 30 kg. Now mentally and physically I feel the same way as I was 30 years ago.
The botanical name of flaxseed is Linum usitatissimum. The plant bears blue flower. Flax seed is very small like nit, brown or golden in color and smooth textured. In ancient times linseed was used as food, as dye for clothes. My grandmother would tie a poultice of flaxseed on boils and pimples. The main nutrient in flaxseed is omega - 3 fatty acid alpha linolenic acid, lignen, protein and fiber. Flaxseed has 30-40 % oil, 25% protein, fiber, vitamin B, selenium, calcium, magnesium, chromium, copper, zinc, potassium, iron, folate etc. Its oil has 36-50% omega -3 alpha linolenic acid. Linseed is beneficial right from conception till old age.
To understand the beneficial effects of flaxseed we first should understand omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid in detail. Both understand omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid are important for our body. These are not produced in the body we have to intake them through our diet. Omega-3 is also present in walnut, almonds etc. Omega -6 is present in ample amount in peanuts, soybean, sunflower, corn oil etc. Omega-3 help in the proper functioning and development of our body especially; brain, nerves, eyes. The membranes of our cells are made up of phospholipids constituted by omega-3. when there is deficiency of omega -3 in the body then these membranes start being produced by omega-6 instead of soft and flexible omega-3 and thus from here we are affected by hypertension, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, obesity, cancer and other diseases. When there is deficiency of omega-3 in the body omega-6 overpowers and causes inflammation and produces prostaglandinE2, these attract gimphocytes and microphos and produce cytokines . These cytokines induce inflammation and produces coaxes enzymes.
Omega-6 gives rise to diseases in the body whereas Omega-3 increases our immunity. During last few decades the quantity of Omega-6 has been increasing in our diet whereas Omega-3 has been decreasing. The fast food and the junk food that are being sold by the multinational companies are full of Omega-6. The refined oil available in the market are also full of Omega6 fatty acids. Since Omega-3 is less in our diet and Omega-6 is abundant we suffer from hypertension, stroke, cardiac arrest, diabetes, obesity, arthritis, loss of appetite, asthma, cancer and such diseases. This deficiency of Omega-3 can be easily fulfilled by consuming 30-50 grams of flaxseed. Flaxseed has been named superstar food because of Omega-3 only.
Flaxseed controls hypertension. Flaxseed increases the good cholesterol, (HDL-Cholesterol) and reduces tri glycerides and bad cholesterol (LDL- Cholesterol). It inhibits blood clots in the arteries and therefore saves from diseases like cardiac arrest and stroke. It helps in maintaining the pace of heart. And reduces the death rate due to ventricular arteriamia.
The other important nutrient in flaxseed is lignin. It is the largest source of lignin. Lignin is 100 times more than any other foodstuff. Lignin is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal and anti-cancerous. Flaxseed helps to remove problems like hot-flashes etc. which happens during menopause. Lignin is especially important in the treatment of cancer of prostrate, uterus, breast, intestine, skin etc. If the mother is not lactating then flaxseed can cure the same. It has been proved from one research in America that flaxseed has more than 27 anti cancerous elements.
There is lot of fiber in flaxseed therefore it provides relief to patients of constipation, piles, anal fistula, IBS. Flaxseed provides relief from day one in constipation. It has been known from a recent research that flaxseed is better remedy for constipation than psyllium husk. Flaxseed prohibits the formation of stones in gall bladder and if there are stones they start liquidating.
Flaxseed is very effective in skin diseases like pimples, eczema, ringworm, itching, scabies etc. omega 3 found in flaxseed improves the health of hair, and makes it beautiful, shiny and strong. It makes the skin attractive, smooth and fair. it makes the nails healthy and strong. Consuming flaxseed and the massage of its oil removes marks and spots, freckles, and wrinkles from the skin. Your eye sight improves by omega 3 colours look more bright and vibrant. in small children The diseases like diarrhea, allergy, asthma, infection of ear, nose and throat happens due to deficiency of omega 3 in the diet. Flaxseed also helps in the treatment in diseases of old age like prostrate, impotence, premature ejaculation etc.
Flaxseed keeps blood sugar under control. Keeps a diabetic patient well. It also provides relief to obese. Eating flaxseed keeps the stomach full and you do not feel hungry for a long time. This increases BMR and we spend more calories.
Any article on flaxseed is incomplete without the mention of Dr. Johanna Budwig. She is a renowned German scientist who has done important research in the treatment of cancer through flaxseed and cottage cheese. She has treated all types of cancer, arthritis, cardiac arrest, diabetes, etc. diseases through flaxseed oil and cottage cheese. Her success rate was 80%. She could treat even those patients who were discharged from hospital saying ‘only prayer can help them’. 17 years ago, Dr. Earnest suffered from cancer his stomach was removed, but after 2 years the cancer had spread in all his body. Flaxseed is a important and complete food for a body builder. It consists of 25% of essential amino acid proteins. Protein helps in building muscles. Flaxseed gives immense strength. Muscle fatigue becomes alright after exercise with flaxseed. Mr. Dickens in his book ‘Ask The Guru’ has named flaxseed as number one body building food.
We should consume about 30-40 gms of flaxseed everyday. It should be roasted in pan without oil and stored. Grind it everyday and mix it with flour and make roti or paranthas. It should not be ground and stored. Grind it everyday. It is spoiled when stored after grinding. You can even add it in vegetables, dal, salad, curd etc.
