Ayurvedic Medicine

Yoga procedure are not seen to be very much effective in treating thyroid disorders. Pranayama or breathing exercise is seen to have miraclous effect on the body. The practice of this technique will help in healing thyroid disorders to a greater extend.

In ayurveda the thyroid disorders both hyper and hypo are mentioned under galaganda. Here i would suggest you to follow both allopathic and ayurvedic treatment in parallel. Once condition is seen to be improved, tapeing of medicine is advised.

Here i shall suggest you certain medicines as an initial line of treatment.

  1. Kanchanara guggulu - This medicine in tablet form shall be taken at a dosage of 2 tab three times a day. It shall be preferably taken after meals.

  2. Shigru patra kwatha - This decoction is prepared out of leaves of moringa oleifera. It shall be taken ata dosage of 60 ml three times a day , preferably an hour before food.

Hyper thyroidism is caused by the hyperactivity of the thyroid gland resulting in excessive production of the thyroid harmone. So basically it is a hypermetabolic state where the metabolism is increased resulting in symptoms like increased heart rate, nervousness, irritability, diarrhoea, weakness, excess sweating, tremors. It is usually caused by inflammation, tumours, excessive iodine in food and with a genetic influence.

So all Asanas that calm down like Savasana, sethubandhasana, marjaryasana, shisu asana, sukhasana, shavasana can be done with proper breathing. Suryanamaskaram can be done gently. Pranayamam like Bhrmari, sheetali, sheekari, ujjayi are beneficial when practised slowly. Yoga nidra has been found very beneficial as it slows down both physically and mentally. It is better to practise Yoganidra at the same time each day with minimum 20min for good results.

Please check your thyroid function tests to understand the progress. Yogasanas and Pranayamam must be done along with regular checkups, based on the results and the symptoms the medicines has to be decided by the doctor and taken accordingly to manage it effectively.

Reduce iodine rich foods and stress which will increase the hyperactivity of the thyroid gland.

Thyroid hormone is one of the main hormone that have control over many functions in the body including growth. A dysfunction in the thyroid gland can affect everything from your weight to metabolic errors, cardiac issues and even fertility issues.. The most common causes for a hyperthyroidism are chronic inflammation of thyroid (thyroiditis) and an auto immune disorder called grave’s disease. So anti inflammatory and immunity enhancing diet and lifestyle help you to prevent the so called condition.

Yoga has got a significant role in enhancing your immune system as well as to streamline and to improve normal glandular functioning.

All types of pranayamas like ujjayi pranayama, anuloma viloma pranayama, kapalabhati pranayama will help you in improving your immunity.Yogasanas like mastyasana, halasana, sarvangasana, ardhachakrasana etc will also help you in preventing hyperthyroidism.

However, if you are new to yoga and pranayama, it is better to approach yoga teacher for basic training since if you are committing any errors there are chances of complications.

Along with yoga, you should adhere to a well balanced diet and lifestyle to get the desired results. Practice meditation daily in order to keep your mind calm as emotionally disturbed mind can cause a disease to aggravate.

Along with yoga and pranayama, you may follow some medications like Kanchanara Guggulu which is helpful in your mother’s conditon.

Yoga for thyroid complaint

There are two complaints related to thyroid, they are hypothyroidism , and hyperthyroidism. Due to less secretion and high secretions of growth hormones leading to imbalance of the functioning of gland respectively may lead to cluster of symptoms like excessive sweating, overweight or losing weight, irritability, obesity etc.

In order to maintain proper glandular functioning, and in order to prevent the symptoms and manage the body weight, you can go for alternative treatments like ayurveda, homeopathy, yoga and pranayama.

Along with ayurvedic treatments, yoga and pranayama are very beneficial for maintaining the proper functioning of the gland, and as well as pranayama helps to reduce the stress levels and irritability.

There are certain yoga postures, which are very helpful to maintain hormonal balance.

Parvathasana, Sarvangasana, Matsyasana, Surya Namaskara, and Pavanamuktasanas are indicated.Pranayamas like Ujjayai Pranayama, Nadi shodhan, Jalandhara Bandha are very helpful.

Yoga mudra and yoga nidra are also very useful.

As thyroid and associated glands like parathyroid, pineal, pituitary, and adrenal glands which plays important role in thyroidism and its functioning, with the help of yoga and pranayama, this can be rectified.

However, one should take care while doing these yoga poses. Follow strict rules like doing yoga for thyroid complaint and associated complaints.

Yoga helps to maintain hormonal balance which in turn helps to maintain the normalcy of thyroid function.

With regards,Dr.Vijay.
